PS2 Software Upgrade

Hey guys,
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, and my question might be kinda stupid, but can I upgrade my PS2 console's software without changing any hardware?

You mean like firmeare upgrade ?!

You can update a few parts of the firmware (sort of) but only the OSD and the DVD player, you get those updates on something like the BBN or the DVD update respectively but they dont do you much good :)
