has anyone ever tried developing a VCD player for the PS2?

I haven't heard of any vcd-specific players, but you may want to look at a project called PS2Reality. They're working on a general media player for the PS2. I don't know if they actually have anything playing yet, but you could always look for their site with google and find out.

Be careful, though... SPAIN IS DIFFERENT. Or so I heard.

I read not too long ago that they aren't going to work on PS2Reality anymore.. which means if it doesn't do it now, its not going to do it.

And I have a feeling it doesn't recognize VCDs, although if it doesn't check file extensions you could find the data file on the VCD disc and play it. I can't remember the name of the file off the top of my head, but stick the vcd in your computer and look for a really big file :)

Of course, creating a vcd player would be relatively easy compared to a general purpose media player. If anyone wants to donate a pre-modded PS2 to me, I'll get right on it ;)

What, and abandon all your other unfinished projects? :P

I wouldn't "abandon," I would "temporarily postpone."
After all... if I'm getting a pre-modded ps2 out of it, making a VCD player is paid work, and paid work comes first :)

BTW I have an SCPH-15000 moded with a Messiah 2.. (This is a JAP Unit thats why I needed it moded)

Sorry but you don't need a modded ps2 to support VCD, you could always add support to read vcd files from network it's veeeeeery easy and there is already commercial product like qcast with this support.

About VCD from cd/dvd unit i remember some threads here in the old forum.

Mavy, hermes and me has not vcd at home so we have never thought to support it

As bigboss says, there was a debate on the old forums over whether it was possible to play burned or off-the-shelf VCDs on the PS2. VCDs are mixed-mode CDs, and as far as I know, even though the PS2 will accept a CD-XA disc and report it as audio, it will not let you access the data track of such discs.
