No. This is a chicken-and-egg problem that you are experiencing.
You have to install ps2menu WITHOUT any UMCDR trick on your memory card. That is, you should use the mrbrown's independance exploit to boot PS2MENU from your memory card. To install PS2MENU on the memory card, you need any memory card writing tool, like an x-port, or some friend with a modchip or used to use a sharp instrument.
Then, when you can finally boot ps2menu from your memory card, you will be able to run any UMCDR cd on your PS2.

Even better, having assumed you've read the UMCDR homepage, what did you think UMCDR was?

as the homepage said pressing the eject button and simply put the disc in.
i thought it was some way of fooling the ps2 and allowing it to boot the disk.
but i obviously didn't pay much attention to the 'Are UMCDRs bootable?' section :). so can you tell me what is it used for.

It is intended to make the PS2 *READ* CDRs, not booting them. And only UMCDR enabled softwares can read from them. Like PS2MENU or PGEN, which are the actual only two softwares able to read them.
So, when you finally get the PS2MENU thing booting using any way, like the mrbrown's exploit, you then can make it read new demos and stuff from any UMCDR media. Also, you can put your genesis rom games in a UMCDR media, and make PGEN reading them. Note: reading. It means you have to boot pgen using any other way. But it could be from ps2menu as well.
So, the main trick for you is now to get ps2menu booting from your memory card, using mrbrown's exploit. Afterward, you would be able to run any further demo/software stored on a UMCDR media.
but i obviously didn't pay much attention to the 'Are UMCDRs bootable?' section :)
Maybe the author should put that section in bold red blinking or something :-P

I read it, and I got the wrong impression.
Has anyone read it properly the first time? :)
