for example the media player. once I have downloaded the file what do I need to do? must I extract the files etc...

You must read the installation instructions in the archive of the program you've downloaded. If there are no installation instructions, you must fire up Google and see if there are any online.
I know the media player at least comes with installation instructions, did you read them?
