has any one considered porting mplayer to the ps2? the ps2 is in need of an open source media player, and i think it would be a good project if someone's bored on a friday afternoon :p

lol. i was more asking whether someone had considered it. there's alot of talk about ps2reality in other threads, and since they don't plan on releasing another version, i would have thought perhaps someone may have considered mplayer as a portable alternative

Actually, one of these days I'll get back on xine for PS2. I prefer to xine to mplayer as it's not as buggy. I started looking over what needed to be done this summer, but I've been too busy on other things to put much into it. However, once I've got my computer stable under Fedora Core 3, I think I may have a little time to look into it again.

My thoughts were to make the input and splitter plug-ins run on the IOP, and have just the video and audio decoders running on the EE. The two sides need to be fully asynchronous with the IOP doing as much as it can to leave the EE with as much free time as possible for decoding video (the MAIN task).

Besides waiting while getting my system setup under Linux the way I like, I've been waiting on a few PS2 issues to settle a little too. Things like the sdk and gs toolkit. For a while there, it also seemed there was trouble making IRXs with the latest toolchain. Things have improved quite a bit over the summer as far as the PS2 libs go.
