MIPS is a type of CPU archeticture (i hate spelling). Intel has it's x86 (most every home pc not a mac [until now]). Mac's use PPC (power PC), but are now switching to intel's x86. Solaris boxes use SPARC processors. You can google it if you wish to know more.

Pretty much it's just the way that a processor does it's work.

Also, there is a huge wealth of info available on the net. You clearly did no searching on this. But I am nice today, there is at least one thread in the forums that can get you started:
