Mic Input .. ?

Post by mrn »

Does anybody have any info whether the earphone/headphone plug
can also host a mic somehow (maybe a fourth - hidden pin?).
The reason I am asking this is that the sketch on the back of the PSP
shows a HEADSET and not just a simple HEADPHONE.

Another thing:
(just for the case this sketch is only on my PSP :)
is it possible to somehow read audio input from a device like the Talkman?

my note on this:
http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=4096
mrn: If the PSP can not behave as USB host now, then the question is:
How does the USB deal with analog audio input signal of some mV?

Nevyn:
I suggest you search the forum before asking questions that've been asked hundred times before...

ok. thanks for the links, Nevyn, instead of locking me out.
what was discusse 100 times?
a) mini usb scanners
b) the apps i listed
c) the top-mounted commercial mic
d) analog-to-digital conversion for PSP
eeeeeeeeee

lock me out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
(before anybody would start to thing about more than games)

to continue the scanner topic:
what i had in mind is probably some external HW allowing us
to communicate with the sacenner. sthing like

- Serial2Scanner port
- MemStick2Scanner port
- WiFI 2 Scanner
- UMD-Port to Scanner
.
.
and the reason I asked this HEADPHONE THING IS to make
- a modem using Audio IN/OUT - to Scanner

ok. skip those which were already 100times discussed, and let*s start with the rest.

Let me just say a few things.

Your ignorance knows no bounds it seems.

Nevyn was refering to the fact that the USB port being used as a USB host port has been discussed several times, and has infact been deemed impossible by the kind people here at ps2dev who have been willing to take their PSPs apart and look at the components.

It is quite possible that the USB microphone somehow works as a USB host itself and allows the Talkman UMD to interact with it that way.

The USB Scanner that you seem to love so much, was not made for the PSP, probably uses the wrong type of USB ports (The PSP has a much smaller version of a USB port, so an adapter would be needed). The Talkman Microphone was made by Sony, who have a complete knowledge of how the PSP was built and how it works, know why? They made it.

You keep restarting this conversation in every single post you post.

You are obviously German, now I'm not one to generalise, but the germans are one of the most recognised industrial countries in the world, I'm talking Atom bombs, Rockets and Tanks. You are clever people, but you can't seem to grasp the fact that the USB wont work.

You are posting again in the wrong topic by posting in your Microphone topic, instead of your scanner topic.

Serial 2 Scanner - May work, if you had a serial scanner. I used to have an old black and white hand scanner, which worked via the COM port. Perhaps you could find one, build yourself a PSP Headphone jack to Serial port as many people have, and develop some software for dealing with this.

Memory Stick 2 Scanner - Will not work, unless you built some kind of intermediary device, which allowed the scanner to scan to it, save it as a file, disguise itself as a memory stick that the PSP will be able to read the file itself from the memory stick.

Wifi 2 Scanner - Pretty much same as above. You'd have either design and build your own accesspoint / embedded device to intermediate with the scanner. I've never heard of a WIFI Scanner.

UMD 2 Scanner - This one is Laughable.

Modem using Audio IN/Out - to Scanner <- This one made me giggle like a school girl, and I don't really care to go into the problems you might face with software - on - the - fly - modulation/demodulation of modem noise, seeing as the standard 12V +/- of a modem to the audio port would BLOW UP YOUR PSP.

But good luck trying =D

Modem:
I meant to communicate through the HEADSET port by using
AD/DA converters and some logic .., not to put ANY +/-12V Modem
directly to the serial port. (Fax-Like Comm)

But really, I do not wanna fight just was touched since the scanner
topic was not about USB hosting, neither about my loved C-Pen,
but the tons of applications such a device could allow (with Lua),
by connecting a micro-scanner using EASILY the same trick used by the Sony Mic.
(Just wanted to be PSP the first device before MS comes out
with their proprietary pocket scan box .)

If that mic behaves as the USB host (this is not from me),
why to think that it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a tiny board
which would make the connection for the Scanner?
btw, connecting external HD was also discussed several time ago
(again, no fight), but still some company appeared with an external
4GB HD.

So, letÄs not close everything which does not work by direct
connection to PSP.

You are talking about adding new hardware which people will have to buy as well as your scanner thing. The 4GB hard drive works by pretending to be a memory stick, and fits inside the memory stick slot.

You are talking about adding new hardware..
yess pls. Just imagine buying some OEM 6x6mm camera modules meant for mobile phones, adding the circuit, creating the Lua functions... putting the circuit on eBay..

.. and letting people use their imagination.
The 4GB hard drive works by pretending to be a memory stick, and fits inside the memory stick slot.
It 's actually a litlle bit bigger than the MemStick ;)
but anyway, it is a CF <-> MemStick conversion module!!!

Anyway, thanks for the answers, Zenrub.

Note: Probably you know that iPods have only a 3-pin 3.5mm Audio Jack (L-R-Gnd). But when starting recording, one of these pins is activated to support a mic (ie some DC supply and an A/D converter gets to be connected in the moment to that pin).

Of course, officially the recording option appears in the iPod menu only in case if a commercial 'Mic' is plugged into the port. The Mic is approved through the serial port which is located beside the 3.5 mm hole in the same way as in case of the PSP. However, ipodLinux does support recording by connecting ANY simple Electret Mic directly to the left channel. Therefore, you see, it is just a question of being able to read and write from/to the AD/DA buffers.

So, coming back to the original topic, the only question is whether the audio connector at the bottom of the PSP support or not a mic.
In other words: is the analod circuitry of the PSP equipped with both AD and DA converters? As you could see from the
prev. example, it is NOT NECESSARY TO HAVE AN EXTRA PIN FOR THE MIC, so please do not judge based on the size of the JAck hole...
Of course, it can happen that the JAck hole of the PSP has 4 rings, not 3 then the question is answered..

Please post any info you find so that we know what could be expected.
Once LuaPlayer would support audio input, I am ready to port simple Speech command control and Speaker Verification algors.

To the Extra HW point:

Image

I am ready to make some jack-to-jack reduction (3.5mm to 2.5mm), or anything we would need for you on a request. cheers, mrn.

Someone managed to build a simple adapter for a regular PC headset.

From what I read in some gaming forums, I got the impression that the official headset has to be connected to the PSP remote control.

BINGO!
The PSP Headset is using a four conductor 3.5mm mini jack. Basically there is one more conductor for the microphone to connect to
So, now, that we know that there are already 3 such devices .) ...
..and being one step further (thnx 2 Gizmo) let me ask the next question:

Is it possible to create sthng like a LuaAudioIn function
which would then communicate with the A/D converter?

I mean, maybe we could have some routines like
ReadFromADCBuffer, WriteToADCBuffer, etc, etc..
This would:
1) allow us not only to store (ie. record) voice signals, but also
to compress them in real-time while waiting for the next buffer to be filled.
(I mean real-time MP3, ADPCM, GSM, etcetc encoding)

2) make the calculation of speech parameter during pronouncing the
command feasible, so the reaction of the machine coul be then really fast!
(Note: Dragon Dictate did run already on a PI-120MHz with 32MB)..

Another thing:
would someby have some mins to describe the following functions,
eventually to post (or point to) some apps using them?

nil voice:stop()
nil voice:resume(Sound) -- DISABLED due to bug.
nil voice:volume( number [0-25] )
nil voice:pan( number [0-255] )
nil voice:frequency( number [0-255] )
bool voice:playing()

thanx a lot again!!! mrn

ok.
1. Jonathan claimed his headset works with a four-pin connection.

2. Then another guy is saying that he made the same thing by using the
PSP remote cable which has definitely only a 3-ring Jack, ie. Jonathan's
mic ring is NOT USED.
3. The already mentioned commercial Mic is connected to the
(let's call it) USB SLAVE plug making peple to pay for an extra
USB HOST (right, Nevyn?) circuitry hosting the PSP to connect it to a shitty 5-cent electret mic to the PSP, all this with a price of the whole USB stuff.
(the mic could have been already implemented, coz sony is aware of all of those karaoke etc application which will pop up, and point 1 or 2 (or both) should be true).

4. then. I checked my Audio connector on the PSP and it definitely seems to be only a 3-pin version.

So, do not these contradictory FACTS make you start thinking that there is sthng waiting for us? ...
I mean just look at the two HUGE screw-holes around your USB hole with the 2 magic pins around. Are you going to pull a car with them?
or....u no what i mean .)

Take a look at your PSP manual or at http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?p=26092#26092 or do a search at forums.ps2dev.org for some more posts about this topic.
