Seems like it's YDL v5.0 and not v4.1

And E17 = Enlightenment DR17.

It's partly a technological marvel and partly a hack-fest, and something I much more associate with fringe coders (like myself) than with a retail product (aka PS3). That's why I was so surprized in my first post.

It's the brainchild of Rasterman (and many other contributors of course), he has some (mostly old!!) demonstration videos at his site:

The second one does a good job at showing off the performance of the compositioning engine (while recording a video no less!)
The fourth one is quite a bit newer, and also longer. It also shows their own quicksilver clone (LuXr is one as well)

Basically, it's the perfect opposite of a "dumb-user-friendly" system. I love it, but I'm still very surprized.
Especially check the second and fourth movie (you'll probably need VLC for that one).

This is just awesome, awesome news. PSP and PS3 development directly on the PS3. 8) Well and of course your basic desktop capabilities, full Firefox and Opera browsers, custom video playback codecs, compression and whatnot.

Now it's just a matter of waiting whether it really comes pre-installed or you need to use a disc of some sort.

Well Sony said it comes pre-installed on the hard drive. I'm hoping that it can be accessed without any special discs. I'm also hoping that there will be an easy distro method, it would be nice to launch homebrew from the XMB menu like PSP and 1.00, 1.50 and 2.71 (with HB Enabler). You know for people who are not into Linux.

But its great to see Sony is keeping good on their promise on allowing homebrew developers to develope software on PS3. Very exciting indeed.

We were told it will be initially available at www.ydl.net (for subscribers). The only way I can see that working is a bootable install cd. Which if true is very, very interesting:)

Job #1 will be to get Gentoo up and going:) And then my first look at ffmpeg in years...

Here's a FAQfor YDL on PS3: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/produ ... eral.shtml

It won't be pre-installed, probably because there will be some other distro's available soon.

Whoa never expected to get quoted here (I'm PeterT@Beyond3D, and I'm registered here for PSP stuff). I just visited for the first time in a while to see wether people here were as excited as I am because of the recent YDL announcements.

Anyway, my only remaining doubt is whether we'll get a good OpenGL driver from the start. But seeing as RSX is very similar to NV's desktop parts, and their desktop Linux support has been quite reasonable, it should work out well.

Or initially any 3D/DRI support at all:) E17 uses it's own compositing engine that is happy to install under Gentoo with zero 3D support...

That would be the worst-case scenario. It actually would make the E17 choice more reasonable, but I really don't see it happening. Total lack of a 3D DRI interface wouldn't help them portray PS3 in a positive light. At all.

The ps3 xmb has the option under one of the settings to install a os. You can see it on this video

Personally, I hope gentoo will be one of the other distros that support the ps3.

Apparently the distro defaults to E17 for the dummy auto setup, but you can also select KDE or Gnome if you want to.

Sorry, I wasn't clear - my comment isn't actually speculation - this is was actually mentioned in an interview. I'll post back here if I find the source again.

Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 won't be available until 27 November, and only as a free download almost a month later, so it's not like having the system in our hands is going to change this discussion right away. ;) Also, some of us have to wait until March (if we are lucky).
