alsa sound

how do you know what version you have installed? or if you have
installed it?

ALSA is an architecture, it doesn't have a version.
There are ALSA libraries and utilities, and to figure out the installed versions of those depends on what distribution you're using. On Debian, for example, try "syanptic".
