You also have to buy a linux kit so you have the RTE that allows you to boot a linux kernel on your PS2. AFAIK, the TGE (the free replacement of the RTE) isn't usable yet.

If you read the ps2linux forums, you can discover what is and
isn't possible:

http://playstation2-linux.com/forum/for ... orum_id=26

By reading those forums I've found directions to do the following:
- install black rhino
- boot linux with no hdd
- boot homebrew without booting linux (thanks mrbrown!)

I found linux on ps2 to be somewhat boring, and unnecessary for
ps2 development. If you want to ssh to an underpowered Linux
device, go buy yourself a Linksys WRT54G or Asus WL-HDD.

But xrhino is only a kernel, and is a old kernel... 2.2... I hope that coming out something at least 2.4 or i try to get the necessarys modules and compile a 2.6. That willl be great.

Black Rhino (rip) is a debian-like distribution with a cool logo:

Don't expect xRhino to release anything anytime soon. Sony already
released a 2.4 kernel (with limited functionality). modules to compile
2.6? haha. The only modules you'll want to get are the ones from the
sps2 project.

Or you could just forget about ps2linux and use a cross-compiler on a
Linux pc. You get to uphold your fanboy status and still have time for
your girlfriend (boyfriend/hooker/cousin, whatever).
