data.psp contains the program to flash the firmware

data.psar contains the files that are written to the firmware

No it is not possible to change the psar file to downgrade your psp to 1.0

ok thanks, i wasn't thinking about downgrading my firmware, but why cant you? and also, if your going to run an emulator or something, then you wouldn't need data.psar right?

What's the URL for the PSP-Wiki again...?

1. DATA.PSAR is encrypted.
2. DATA.PSAR is of unknown format.
3. DATA.PSAR has an internal checksum.
4. The Updater/Flasher application does integrity checking on the PSAR and/or its contents. (?)

I expect this also covers why developers aren't using PSAR files...
